I love music. It is a constant part of my daily life. At any given time during my day there is rarely a minute where I’m not either listening to, singing along with or thinking about music. One of the things I love about music is there’s always something new to hear and discover. This works on a couple of levels. The shear volume of music is ever increasing. Artists release new music every day so there is always something new to hear. There is also new music to discover within the music you already know and love. It could be a chord progression you’ve never noticed or maybe a secondary rhythm that’s always been there but seems to magically spring to the forefront the 50^th time you listen to a song. I tend to get so locked into the music side of songs (which in my mind means the actually rhythms and sounds and notes that are being played) that I filter out the other half of the equation: the lyrics. It’s always refreshing when I stumble across a lyric that jumps out at me. It makes the music seem fresh all over again.  

Tonight while listening to Stop This Train by John Mayer the following lyric struck a cord with me:

So scared of getting older

I'm only good at being young

This struck me as a very 30-something thing to say which happens to be exactly where I’m at right now. I can readily identify with the feeling it conveys. I’ve been scared about getting older for years. The fear comes from not knowing what lies ahead. Some (maybe most) may find that exciting but it tends to terrify me. The only thing I’ve ever been is young. What do I know about being old?

Thankfully those feelings have begun to subside somewhat. Life is forcing me to grow up and move forward. For the first time in my life (if not ever) I’m looking forward to what the future holds. Growing old seems like a wonderful thing now that I have someone to grow old with. Dreams of having kids, making a home and just living life in general seem to pop into my head whenever I have a moment to sit down and let my mind wander. Those are very comforting thoughts. I may only be good at being young right now but day by day I’m learning how to grow old. Maybe some day I’ll be good at being both young (at heart) and old (in maturity and life experience). Maybe.

Why do you blog?

When I first started blogging way back in 2002 I viewed it as a fun way to hone my writing skills. I had a rocky start but I did notice a vast improvement over the next year or two. I looked at one of my old posts the other day and thought "that was pretty good." Unfortunately my writing seems to have hit a plateau or even declined in the last couple of years. That's probably because back at my peak I actually had time to pick a topic, think about it and write something substantive. Now I barely have time to look at this thing much less write something of any length. Now it's just quick hitters and fragments of thoughts. Blogging is still fun I just don't have much time to do it.

There's nothing like a petty squabble between celebrities to send folks searching. Ideally, the tiff involves vapid starlets arguing over who started the purse-dog trend, but Clint Eastwood telling Spike Lee to "shut his face" makes for a perfectly acceptable substitute.

Do you think it's a wise thing to be ticking off Dirty Harry? Maybe Spike Lee is feeling lucky. He does have a point though. I'm not sayin'. I'm just sayin'.

Call me ignorant, but I do not understand the fascination with John Mayer. I suppose he’s somewhat attractive. I know that his smash hits like “Your Body is a Wonderland” and “Waiting on the World to Change” are supposed to get under my skin with their tender and positive messages. But there’s something I can’t get past. It’s not that his voice irritates me, or that I think he’s undeserving of his Grammy awards. It’s not that the specific male pop singer/guitarist thing has never appealed to me (if a guy does pop, I’d prefer he was more straight up about it a la Justin Timberlake)—there’s just something about John Mayer’s overall person that annoys me beyond description. He seems arrogant, cocky and completely phony. Between his narcissistic blogs about the “poignant statement” that is his new 80s-style feathered haircut, charging fans $10 for a photo op, and the mysterious gossip about his exceeding abilities in bed, it’s more than I can stomach. His seemingly all-knowing and romantic treatment of women via his lyrics on songs like “Daughters” actually comes across as disingenuous to me. Does anyone else see where I’m coming from? He’s climbed his way up the celebrity dating ladder from Jennifer Love Hewitt to Jessica Simpson to Jennifer Aniston, and it troubles me that many other women are in fact charmed by him. After doing my research I do feel badly, because, yes, John Mayer did work for over a year at a gas station to save up for his first guitar and yes, he has been involved with a number of charities as well as starting up his own non-profit. So maybe he’s not the worst dude in the world, but it doesn’t mean I have to like him, or his music. Now you tell me: what’s your take on John Mayer?

Why you hating on my boy John Mayer? Don't hate. Appreciate. He can't help if his game is smooth like butter. Coincidentally his song just came on the Black Negro. JM's game is so tight he need not speak in his own defense. His songs do the work for him. Yeah, his new doo is a bit out there but I still like him a lot. Is it just me or does he look like Marc Anthony's younger, slightly less malnourished/emaciated looking brother?

The Rev. Michael Pfleger, a Chicago activist, also apologized for last Sunday's sermon at Obama's church, in which he said Clinton's eyes welled with tears before the New Hampshire primary because she felt "entitled" to the Democratic nomination and because "there's a black man stealing my show."

Obama needs to stop going to church. Televangelists were invented for this exact situation. You get to have church from the comfort of your own couch. Watch a Creflo Dollar program. Maybe a little TD Jakes. Mix in a little health and wealth gospel from Joel Olsteen. Throw in a Veggie Tales tape for the kids and you're good to go.
