The Memphis Tigers basketball team is ranked #1 in the country. The Tennessee Volunteers are ranked # 2. They play each other tomorrow at the FedEx Forum here in Memphis. It's kind of a big deal.
All I can say is wow! Some tickets are going for upwards of $10,000 dollars. Yes that's 10 with 3 zeros behind it. The city is going absolutely crazy with Tigers fever. I'm excited myself and I'm not even that big of a fan. This is the first time the two teams have played while being ranked this high. It's the biggest game in the history of this rivalry.
This game should go a long way to prove (or disprove) whether or not the Tigers are the real deal or just paper tigers. If they lose the critics will say: "See we knew they weren't for real. They played some real competition and folded like a house of cards." This would of course ignore the very tough non-conference schedule they played earlier in the year. If they win it will merely maintain the status quo with not much being said and the bare minimum amount of respect given. That suits the Tigers and the city of Memphis just fine though. Both entities relish playing the Rodney Dangerfield role. Unlike my lowly Memphis Grizzlies though, who are pitiful yet again and are in some ways the laughing stock of the NBA, the Memphis Tigers are more than worthy of respect. Maybe if they can pull out a yet another win (their 27th of the season and 48th consecutive home victory) that will change. I'm not holding my breath though. Respect won't even come by going deep into the NCAA tournament. If memory serves they've made the Elite 8 the last 2 years. Ultimately the respect will only come with a Final 4 appearance or by winning it all.
