It's time to try something new. Remix the random mix so to speak. On Fridays in addition to the normal random mix I'll be inserting my favorite lyric from each song. If nothing else it should prove to be a good exercise to force me to pay more attention to the lyrics of the songs I like. It should be fun so here we go...

- Angels & Airwaves - Good Day (acoustic) - I-Empire
I should've turned backI should've known betterThan to walk away defeatedI'll say it tonight, I'll say it foreverAnd this time I really swear I mean it
- Amy Winehouse - F*** Me Pumps - Frank
Never miss a night,
Cuz your dream in life,
Is to be a footballers wife. You don't like players,
That's what you say-a,
But you really wouldn't mind a millionaire. You don't like ballers,
They don't do nothing for ya,
But you'd love a rich man six foot two or taller
- Hanson - Dying To Be Alive - This Time Around
I heard you crying
Somebody stole my soul
How could i be dying?
I turned twenty five days ago yeah
Were all on the ground just crying out
Would somebody save me please.
I wont, sit around just thinkin bout, the troubles that tomorrow brings...
- Justin Timberlake - Cry Me A River - FutureSex/LoveShow - Live From MSG
You were my sun
You were my Earth
But I bet you didn't know all the ways I loved you
No
So you took a chance
And made other plans
But I bet you didn't think that they would come crashing down...
- Snap! - Rhythm Is A Dancer (Original Mix) - Rhythm Is A Dancer Single
From the rap section:
Free your soul and let it face you
Got the beat what you wanna
If the groove don't get ya the rifle's gonna
I'm serious as cancer
When I say "Rhythm is a dancer"
- Fat Jon - Day - Lightweight Heavy
Instrumental - No lyrics
- Silverchair - The Closing - Freak Show
Welcome to the closing
Not for love what for?
It's easy to be taken
But to say
Come again
Leave again
Waste of time
Come again
-
dc Talk - Luv Is A Verb - Welcome To The Freak
Show
Thinkin' of a way to explain-o
Cause ya' know when I'm flowin' like a bottle of Drain-o
Simple and plain, L-O-V-E
Ain't all that junk that ya see on TV
Put soaps on a rope cause they ain't worth copin' with
It's a myth that there ain't no hope and
Luv is enough if it's unconditionally
Givin' now you're living out the Great Commission
- Primitive Radio Gods - Outside A Broken Phone Booth With Money In My Hand - Rocket
This song is chock full of thought provoking lyrics:
Am I alive or thoughts that drift away?
Does summer come for everyone?
Can humans do as prophets say?
And if I die before I learn to speak
Can money pay for all the days I lived awake
But half asleep?
- U2 - Elevation - All that You Can't Leave Behind
Is Bono talking about God here? God IS love after all:
Love, lift me up out of these blues
Won't you tell me something true
I believe in you
- Dave Matthews Band - Busted Stuff - Busted Stuff
Not enough
Never too much
Woman looked just like love
Rolling stone
Gathers no moss
But leaves a trail of Busted Stuff
- Black Eyed Peas - Don't Phunk with My Heart - Monkey Business
Girl, you had me, once you kissed me
My love for you is not iffy
I always want you with me
I'll play Bobby and youll play Whitney
- Alicia Keys - Where Do We Go From Here - As I Am
We're at the crossroads my dear
Where do we go from here?
Maybe you won't go, maybe you'll stay
Oh I know I'm gonna miss you either way
It's such a lonely road
- Seduction - Two Make It Right - Forever Freestyle
Nothing earth shattering here but it's a fun song:
I can see it in your eyes
You feel the same way I feel about you
Some call it chemistry
I call it you should be with me

- Boys Like Girls - Thunder - Boys Like Girls
- Coldplay - Talk - X&Y
- Alkaline Trio - Time To Waste - Crimson
- Justin Timberlake - Chop Me Up - FutureSex/LoveShow - Live from MSG
- James Brown - Funky Drummer - Star Time (Disc 3)
I love this song. It features what is probably the most sampled drum break in history. James Brown gets out of the way and lets his band do it's thing. He throws in his James Brownisms here and there but for the most part it's just the band. JB had a really awesome band.
- CRS (Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West & Pharrell) - Us Placers - Can't Tell Me Nothing
- Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds - Crush - Live At Radio City
One of my favorite DMB songs...now in acoustic!
The Black Negro decided to flip the script and go all urban this morning. (<Side Note> Why is the vast majority of "black" music labeled urban? There's lots of black folks who live out in the country.</End Side Note>). There's a little "non-urban" at the tail end to balance things out a little bit. He does this from time to time which is pretty cool. It's like he's saying you listen to too much "white" music so I'm taking it into my own hands (even though he doesn't have hands) and bringing you back to your roots. Have at it Black Negro. Have at it. <Another Side Note: I like to make fun of the labels people place on music. Music is music to me. There's only three types of music in my opinion. There's music I like, music I don't like and music I haven't heard yet.</End Side Note>

The first time I heard this song I was amazed. A Daft Punk sample? What other artist in hip-hop samples Daft Punk? That's really nice right there.
- Trey Songz - Missin' You - Trey Day
- The Prodigy - Girls - Always Outnumbered Never Outgunned
- Flyleaf - All Around Me [Acoustic] - Flyleaf
I stumbled upon Flyleaf on iTunes. They seem pretty cool. There still aren't a ton of bands with female lead singers (at least in the mainstream) so I thought I'd check them out. I like their sound. The guitars are really crunchy. The lead singer, Lasey Mosley, has a nice voice. She's no Amy Lee (of Evanescence fame) but her voice is tight. This is a good song. I'm a sucker for a song with acoustic guitar.
- Dave Matthews Band - Space Between (Live) - Gorge (Disc 2)
The Black Negro decided it wanted to act up this morning. (Actually I'm sure I pressed a button or something while putting him in pocket or something but whatever.) When I put him in the dock on my desk this morning and hit play it had started over at song number one in the playlist. Since it's a randomly shuffled playlist it started with a different song than I originally heard when I got up this morning. As a result I lost the list of songs I've been listening to so far this morning. What's listed below is the list of songs that have played on the Black Negro since I've been here at work plus what I could remember playing early this morning and on the drive to work. The sun is out this morning. It's cold but beautiful. No blah today. Let's get to it.

Been a while since I cranked one of these out. I've been writing a lot of *gasp* regular non-music related posts lately. I don't know where the recent flurry of posting activity came from. Just enjoying the inspiration while it lasts. This one is all over the place. I guess the Black Negro was feeling fairly eclectic this morning.

- Heavy D & the Boyz - Let It Rain - Peaceful Journey
Me and some of the other brothers were talking about Heavy D and this album specifically the other day in our team chat room. This song and album will always be linked to Saturday morning chores in my head. Peaceful Journey was one of my "chores albums" when I was a kid. Everybody knows music makes the work go faster. The chores album list was pretty short back then. It was pretty much Peaceful Journey and Cooleyhighharmony ($8 allowance [if all chores are done] doesn't equal to much CD buying money.) I'd pop them in the CD player and get to scrubbin. Most kids complain about doing chores. I did my fair share too but the music made the whole process much more bearable.

My bruh's card will likely be revoked because of this but I like 'N Sync. There I said it. I ain't shamed.
- Interpol - SongSeven - Antics Website Bonus Track
- Fabolous - What Should I Do (ft. Lil' Mo) - From Nothin' To Somethin'
This is the obligatory hip-hop Put God first track all rappers are required to include on their albums by law regardless of how many n-words, F-bombs, H-words and tales of sexual conquests proceed it. This is a really nice track when stacked up with other songs of it's type on other folks joints.
- Weezer - In The Garage - Weezer
This is another bruh's card violation. The Black Negro is trying to get me in trouble.
- Chic - Good Times - Party

This brings back memories of Freshman year at Fisk University. I think I got into Silverchair as act of rebellion against the environment around me. I'm not sure why I went to an HBCU. I justified it at the time as reconnecting with 'my people' (visions of School Daze and Higher Learning danced in my head) but when I got there it felt like a completely foreign world. Talk about culture shock. I had it double. The shock of living in the states after being away for 10 years + going from a racially diverse environment on military bases to a single race environment made for a really rough first year of college. Couple that with a triffling girlfriend who dumped me for no reason and I had the recipe for rebellious seclusion. I didn't fit in. I felt like an outsider. What better group to listen to than the kings of mid-90's angst, Silverchair. I walked around campus with my head down, headphones on, volume cranked. I rocked out pretty much every day. The other tapes I had in my me against the world arsenal consisted of Alanis Morrssette (angst to the 10th power), Dave Matthews Band, Mariah Carey (to provide balance to the chaos). I didn't feel a part of the Fisk world so I created my own little safe cocoon. It insulated me from what was going on around me until I was able to get up out of that place. Fisk wasn't/isn't a bad place. It just wasn't the place for me. Silverchair helped make it a little more bearable.
