I was surprised to see that I haven't done one of these things since 11/29. I definitely haven't NOT been listening to music since that time. I can't think of the last time I went a day without listening to some form of music on my ipod or computer or *gasp* on the radio. December was just crazy around here as I'm sure it was for everyone. My normal blogging time (here at work *gasp*) was cut way down due to an inordinately busy December. It's usually dead around here in December but not this year. I guess folks were trying to get their grind on in hopes of getting a bigger merit reward this spring. But whatever. This is the mix. It's the first one of the year. Yaaay...?

Got a nippy cold front passing through Memphis right now. Cold Canadian air got it cold up in this piece. I almost had to bust out my Nanook of the North coat but my wife talked me out of it. 36 degrees isn't THAT cold. It is when you remember that we were still up in the 90's less than a month ago though.

- Yellowcard - Breathing - Ocean Avenue
This is the first Yellowcard song I recall hearing. It's still one of my favorites. I love the fast paced, high energy feel it has. Breathing is a great song to get you awake and ready to start the day.
- P.O.D. - Will You - Payable On Death
- Adema - Giving In - Adema
This is a very depressing song when you listen to the lyrics. I can't really explain why I like it so much. I think it's the crunchy guitar and heavy bass line.

This has been a very difficult week on the home front. Glad it's about over. Among other things (God, prayer, family and friends) music has been my refuge. Here's the music I've listened to this morning.

- Ghostface Killah - Shakey Dog - Fishscale
- The Roots - Long Time (Feat. Peedi Pablo & Bunny Sigler) - Game Theory
- Bone Thugs-N-Harmony - Flow Motion - Strength & Loyalty
Bone has got their staccato groove back on this track and album as a whole. I've really been diggin' it.
- Christina Aguilera - Oh Mother - Back To Basics
- Jurassic 5 - Radio - Feedback
- Fort Minor - Remember the Name - Petrified / Remember the Name EP
- Carlos Santana - Hermes - All That I Am
Does Santana ever sing on his tracks? I can't recall hearing a song from him where there wasn't a guest vocalist. Just an observation. I guess he does his singing through his guitar.
- Mary J. Blige & Method Man - I'll Be There For You / Your'e All I Need To Get By - I'll Be There For You Single
My love of this song has been covered several times before so we'll just move on.
- Colbie Caillat - Midnight Bottle - Coco
Yesterday I said Colbie's voice brought Shania Twain to mind. On this song I hear india.arie. I think I'll start calling Colbie the vocal chameleon.
- Black Eyed Peas - Dum Diddly - Monkey Business
- Interpol - Who Do You think - Out Love To Admire
It felt like Interpol had fallen off their game with their previous album, Antics. If that is indeed the case the band has come roaring back with this new album. I'm thoroughly enjoying listening to it thus far.

- Kenna - Siren - New Sacred Cow
The New Sacred Cow is getting awfully old. Will there ever be a new Kenna album? My inquiring mind wants to know. It may be time to change the album title to Sacred Cow or Old Sacred Cow.
- Carrie Underwood - Starts with Goodbye - Some Hearts
This song//album is on The Black Negro (I have resigned myself to the iPod's new name because of my wife's refusal to call it by it's God given name, Gordo Negro Sugoi) because my wife loves Carrie Underwood. Not having watched American Idol before this last season I didn't know who she was until I started seeing her sing at every awards show imaginable over the last year or so. She's definitely growing on me. Her voice is incredible and the good looks don't hurt her mass appeal either.
- Hoobastank - Born To Lead - Every Man For Himself
- Jamiroquai - Didjerama - Travelling Without Moving
- AFI - Paper Airplanes (Makeshift Wing) - Sing The Sorrow
This has been the soundtrack of my day so far. Talk about a diverse list of artists and genres. Just further proof of my desire to not be boxed in whether it be intellectually, physically or in my musical preferences. I thought it was going to be an all hip-hop all the time type of day with the way Black Negro came out of the gates. It all balanced out in the end though.

Another iTunes discovery here. Reviewers on the site liken her music to Jack Johnson's so called beach music. The songs may be similar in spirit but vocally and in terms of instrumentation they are different in my opinion. Jack's songs are very sparse. Just a voice and a guitar on a lot of the songs. Colbie's songs have more layers. Vocally she brings to mind Shania Twain without the twang.
- T.I. - Da Dopeman - T.I. vs. T.I.P.
Yet another cautionary Hip-Hop tale about living a life on the streets and making it big in the drug game. To T.I.'s credit though the last verse does tell the other side, getting snitched out and being thrown in jail. Unfortunately the 3 or 4 verses before it make the life sound so tantalizing that the so called reward (money, cars, women and respect) seems well worth the risk. That being said the track is HOT!!!
- Ray Charles - Halleluja I Love Her So - Ulimate Hits Collection Disc 1
- John Coltrane - Syeeda's Song Flute - Giant Steps
I find myself moving back into a jazz listening phase. I don't have a large jazz collection currently since I don't listen to it all that often. Having played in a jazz band in a former life I've always heard about John Coltrane but never taken the time to really dig into his catalogue. I've heard a tune here or there but that's it. So I decided to pick up some Coltrane. I know, I know. How can I be into jazz and have never really listened to Coltrane? I don't really have an answer to that other than to say I'm not a hardcore jazz head yet. After some research online it was suggested that Giant Steps would be a good place to start. I'm really liking what I've heard so far. I think Mr. P.C. is my current favorite off this album.
